What is the purpose of a neuropsychological assessment?

Neuropsychological assessment typically involves assessment of various aspects of an individual’s cognition, including attention and concentration, learning and memory, language and visuospatial functioning, executive functions such as problem solving and planning, and processing speed, in addition to an examination of their emotional, social and behavioural functioning. We adopt a flexible approach to assessment depending on the specific question in mind, whether that be to explore a diagnosis, characterise an individual’s cognition, or address someone’s ability to make complex life decisions.

What does neuropsychological assessment involve?

Neuropsychological assessment typically involves a clinical interview with the client and possibly a family member, cognitive testing with validated psychometric measures, an assessment of mood and/or social functioning, and review of any relevant records, such as medical records or school reports. The assessment involves preparation of a formal report by the Clinical Neuropsychologist that outlines the history of the client, their cognitive strengths and weaknesses, the assessment results, and provides a range of strategies and recommendations that might assist the client to address any areas of concern. any relevant support people in a feedback session. The findings of the assessment will be explained to the client and any relevant support people in a feedback session.
